How to obtain the CEng qualification issued by Cibse/IMechE?
Share
Friends in the engineering field should be familiar with CIBSE or IMechE. Both are recognized institutions with the authority to issue "Chartered Engineer / CEng" licenses. Of course, there are also other institutions with the authority to issue CEng. However, CIBSE and IMechE are more popular among the Hong Kong engineering community. CIBSE stands for The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers; IMechE stands for Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Both societies have branches in Hong Kong. Engineers practicing in Hong Kong can apply for the Chartered Engineer (CEng) qualification from the Hong Kong branch.
CIBSE and IMechE are widely popular in Hong Kong. The main reasons are as follows:
Professional certification
The professional qualifications provided by CIBSE and IMechE are highly recognized in the industry. Many engineers and technicians hope to use these certifications to enhance their professional qualifications, make their career status more stable, and expand their opportunities for promotion and salary increases.
Industry needs
As Hong Kong's economy develops, the demand for high-quality construction and mechanical engineering continues to increase. CIBSE focuses on construction services engineering, while IMechE covers a wider range of mechanical engineering fields, highlighting professionalism and focus. It is extremely helpful to individual engineers and companies. For example, if a company has a team of ten or more engineers with chartered engineers or related qualifications, it can apply to become a BAND 1 Consultant of the Architectural Services Department of the Hong Kong Government. This type of company can handle large-scale government projects with an estimated value of more than 400 million yuan. This is very attractive to small and medium-sized enterprises.
Education and training
The professional development and continuing education courses offered by CIBSE/IMechE are valued by engineers and help them keep pace with the latest trends and technologies in the industry.
Network and resources
Highly recognized societies will have mutual recognition of professional qualifications, such as HKIE (The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers). The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, CIBSE and IMechE all have mutual recognition of professional qualifications. If a certain engineering project requires an engineer level, he or she must be MHKIE (Corporate Member). of HKIE), engineers with CIBSE and IMechE CEng qualifications will also be recognized to apply to become MHKIE through mutual recognition channels to increase their competitiveness.
International perspective
CIBSE and IMechE have international backgrounds and can help Hong Kong engineers connect with international standards and enhance their global competitiveness.
policy support
The importance that the Hong Kong government and relevant institutions attach to the engineering profession, as well as the promotion of sustainable development and smart buildings, have further increased the influence of these professional institutions.
Obtain the basic qualification of Chartered Engineer (CEng)
For the qualifications to apply for the British Chartered Engineer (CEng), both Cibse and IMechE have their own basic requirements for candidates, including academic qualifications, relevant work experience, etc.:
CIBSE's competency standards directly correspond to the Statement of Competency for Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration issued by the Engineering Council under UK-SPEC. Applicants with the required academic qualifications will take the academic route, while those who do not meet the academic qualifications will take the experience route. way.
CIBSE British Institution of Building Services Engineers (academic route)
If you have obtained the following academic qualifications when applying, you can apply to CIBSE through academic channels:
Recognized Master of Engineering (MEng)
A recognized bachelor's degree with honors in engineering or technology and a recognized master's degree or Doctor of Engineering (EngD).
A recognized bachelor's degree with honors in engineering or technology commenced before September 1999.
A bachelor's degree recognized by the Washington Agreement (WA) (for students admitted in 2015, master's level is required).
European Federation of National Engineering Societies (EEED) second cycle degree qualification.
Separately assessed engineering/technical qualifications to the same academic level.
Academic Pathway Process
1. Apply to the Institute and submit the Engineering Practice Report (an existing CEng is required to sign the report)
2. Review the report and arrange interviews (if the report is successfully approved)
3. Conduct professional (CEng) interview
4. Assessment and approval by CIBSE (e.g. successful interview)
5. Obtain the British Chartered Engineer (CEng) qualification after success and become a member of the British Institution of Building Services Engineers
CIBSE British Institution of Building Services Engineers (Experiential Pathway)
If you do not obtain the academic qualifications above (academic route) when applying, you can apply to Cibse through the experience route:
1. Apply to the Institute and submit the Engineering Practice Report (an existing CEng is required to sign the report) and CEng experience template
2. Review the application and report, and arrange interviews (if the report is successfully approved)
3. Practical learning and professional (CEng) interview
4. Assessment and approval by Cibse (e.g. successful interview)
5. Obtain the British Chartered Engineer (CEng) qualification after success and become a member of the British Institution of Building Services Engineers
CEng Experience Sample The purpose of this sample form is to demonstrate how applicants have learned in a professional environment and they must demonstrate that their knowledge and skills are equivalent to those acquired in a master's level academic environment. The learning outcomes on this sample form are derived from the Engineering Council's Accreditation Model for Higher Education Programs (AHEP 4), which details the standards that academic programs must cover to be accredited. In order to determine that an engineer has gained sufficient experience to qualify as equivalent to a master's degree, they must describe projects in which they have led or been deeply involved in a variety of engineering-related activities and have the ability to solve problems, which may be the applicant's engineering practice For the same projects mentioned in the report, when describing these activities or projects, applicants should clearly indicate their ability to perform and handle the activities described in the CEng Experience Sample. Applicant descriptions should be clear and concise, including how the applicant acquired the required knowledge and skills, using the word "I" rather than "we".
CIBSE British Chartered Engineer (CEng) Assessment Criteria
MCIBSE requires engineers to develop solutions to engineering problems using new or existing technologies through innovation, creativity, and change. They may also have technical responsibility for complex systems with significant risks. To meet the requirements of MCIBSE, candidates or applicants need to demonstrate skills and experience that meet 17 specified competency standards.
CIBSE British Chartered Engineer (CEng) Assessment Criteria (Supplement)
IMechE British Institution of Mechanical Engineers
The academic knowledge of the applicant or candidate must reach a Master of Engineering degree (MEng) recognized at the master's level.
Recognized bachelor's and master's qualifications in relevant subjects Bachelor's degree plus on-the-job experience, either through short courses, part-time bachelor's courses or other recognized routes
If the academic qualifications of the applicant or candidate do not appear to meet the above requirements, they may still apply to IMechE for the Chartered Engineer (CEng) qualification
Applicants or candidates must be able to demonstrate their ability to use new or existing technologies to solve engineering problems through innovation, creativity and change. Applicants or candidates need to demonstrate that their abilities are in line with the capabilities described in the Engineering Council UK-SPEC.
